50 Shades of Green

Should Extinction Rebellion become a global political party?

The year is 2032. As multiple “bread basket failures” become more frequent and the world begins to realise that humanity is running out of road, the political landscape has shifted towards Green parties. Hunger has affected the electorate so profoundly that desperation leads to a series of protest votes in national elections, and the most drastic, sudden seismic shift in politics the world has ever witnessed. Everything’s gone Green

No, the Green’s lead hasn’t come from Germany. It hasn’t come from the UK. It has come from the most unlikely of places, the Third World. Bangladesh could be the first country to have a Green Rule, as 80 million sea level rise-displaced Bangladeshis vote literally “with their feet”

But look closer: what type of Green party are we talking about? In a world overtaken by panic, bi-national tensions for resources, and utter chaos, what chance does Democracy have to shine?

We could be staring down a series of parliaments composed of 50 shades of Greens, but make no mistake that the possibility of a Green Far Right or Green Far Left movement is real. A movement that promises drastic takeover of the big CO2 emitters through Nationalisation, authoritarian Big Brother rules to monitor CO2 footprints on everyone, while pursuing a “blame the country next door” policy to find the villain, the “witch” that the hangry (hungry+angry) electorate desperately wants. Can there be a moderating voice?

Being a political party would be an oxymoron for XR, a movement that de facto accepts that politics has failed. However, XR may not have a choice. It may become the only power able to stop the Green far right or far left. A unifying force, represented in all countries across the world by the same party
